Sunset Drive-In Theatre

Known for its vast drive-in-theater size, The Sunset Drive-In Theatre is located on historic Duarte Avenue in sunny city of San Luis Obispo, CA. Movie buffs and independent filmmakers frequent the theater to see their favorite films. Featured regularly in the Los Angeles Times Best Seller lists, The Sunset Drive-In Theatre is a favorite local hangout for locals and visitors alike. With live entertainment and reserved seating, The Sunset has always been famous. Even though the drive-in has closed temporarily for renovations, it will be back before you know it.

Built-in the late 1940s, The Sunset was owned by Frank Vincent and operated for decades. He created a series of landmark movies, including “The Damned United,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” In the mid-to-late 1960s, Vincent decided to create another classic movie starring Clark Gable, called “Gidget.” Although it never made a hit, “Gidget” did become a cult comedy classic. Among his other notable works are “The Blue Lagoon,” “Million Dollar Baby,” “Duck Soup,” and “Pixar Cars.”

For those who enjoy camping with the family, the one and only Sunset RV (Commerce Street Mobile RV) parking lot offer a safe, comfortable place to park your car and enjoy a movie. The theater is a one-story structure that seats about 600 people. Each seat has a plush reclining chair that offers a great view of the screen. There are also several locations across the city that allow the use of oversized blankets on the chairs. All of these perks make The Sunset an affordable favorite with RV owners and tailgate parties.

The Sunset is a popular stop for college football and volleyball games, baseball tournaments, and school plays and concerts. Local events include chili cook-offs and free concerts held at the theater. Each Thursday, the theater hosts a free show featuring popular bands and artists in the area. The musical acts often include local musicians as well as up-and-coming bands from other cities and states. The best time for these concerts is in the evening because most of the audience will be out enjoying the evening’s activities.

In addition to the regular shows, the Movie House Theater has a second location on Fitchburg road known as the “Movie Stop.” If movies and music are not your “cup of tea,” but you still love to watch movies, this is your second home. The ambiance is relaxed and comfortable. Both indoor and outdoor shows are regularly offered.
