Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

About Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, located in City of San Luis Obispo on the east coast of California, is a Catholic mission. It is one of twenty-six approved missions founded by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Luis Obispo in 1772. The original mission was named after the Spanish king who had visited the area and marveled at the beautiful beach and mission. The name “San Lucien” means “of the mountain.”

Mission San Lucien sits on a peninsula in the bay of Cholula, just east of Trocadero and south of Yuma. Father Junipero Serra established the mission to provide a house for workers and missionaries. The main focal point of the mission was the beach, and the grounds were initially created to build a chapel and a town square. This was later changed to include a school.
