English Avenue
A few years ago, English Avenue was a neglected neighborhood in Atlanta of Georgia. The historic area in the Proctor Creek Watershed has faced various challenges, including a need for more green space and combined sewer overflows. But its residents fought back to make it a great setting. With Park Pride’s help, they turned the block into a beautiful community.
In addition to great shopping and dining options, English Avenue offers five parks within two miles. Within a mile of the neighborhood, you’ll find two shopping centers, the Georgia Aquarium, and more. If you’re a sports fan, you’ll also be close to the Georgia Dome, home of the Atlanta Falcons.
English Avenue Yards features workspaces for a variety of businesses. Nearby are companies such as Awesome, Inc., CoSa VFX, Sumptuous Media, and Blanqi. English Avenue Yards has room if you’re looking for a modern, creative office space. The neighborhood is home to various creative types, including small and large-scale businesses. The area is available in different styles and sizes.
The neighborhood’s new park is a long-awaited development. In August, the community and partners broke ground for the project, which will help mitigate flooding and address the lack of park access in the area. The ceremony was presided over by City Councilmember Ivory Lee Young, Jr., and Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Amy Phuong revealed the park’s official name, Boone Park West.
Initially, the Proctor was intended to be a condominium development. With the approval of Invest Atlanta’s board, the company hopes to begin construction by July or August. Still, the plans include 132 apartments and six for-sale live-work units for small businesses. This project will be a great addition to the English Avenue neighborhood.
The neighborhood is full of challenges, opportunities, and hope. It’s home to various residents with varying opinions on its future. A few of these residents are Co-Chairs of the Proctor Creek Stewardship Council. They believe the best way to win the community’s support is to put residents at the table. That’s why they’re involved in the park’s planning and will have an active role in its construction.
A new development in Atlanta has fueled fears of gentrification and displacement. However, Echo Street West developers are trying to cast their project as organic and gritty. While the project’s first phase is scheduled to bring 300 apartments, it will also feature 3.4 acres of green space and outdoor entertainment. Recently, they also bought an extra acre of land to accommodate the development.
