Chinatown Historic District

The Chinatown Historic District is located in the central portion of the city of San Luis Obispo, CA, in the far-western corner of the city. The district was designated a historical area by the county of Riverside. In the early decades of this new California city, Chinese immigrants brought goods, livestock, and culture to San Luis Obispo’s Chinatown. This unique cultural area continues to thrive today, attracting both visitors looking for a glimpse of the past, as well as locals speaking Chinese, preserving the rich heritage and history of this unique community.

The Chinatown Historic District sits south of Old Town, on Santo Domingo and La Jolla border. A stroll through the streets of this historic district provides one the chance to relive the history of the Chinese immigrants who first came to this country over a century ago. Many of the original shops are still in operation, and have been lovingly restored by their former owners. Chinese street vendors line the main thoroughfare of Market Street, displaying items from their home country while also selling fresh produce, souvenirs, and clothing. Chinese groceries and tea shops line the main drag of Prospect Street, where many Asian dishes such as Ching-Chong, Cantonese, and Chinese foods are served.

Located directly between San Pedro and Miramar Bay, the San Luis Obispo coastline is lined with beautiful shoreline properties ideal for residential use. Many of these properties are full of historic character, as Chinese immigrants in the past built them. Many homes are unique, as many are unique in architecture and interior design, but they are all a part of the historic district. There are state parks and forests scattered throughout the area, as well as freeform streets and paths. San Luis Obispo County has many parks of various sizes, but the majority of residents prefer to use the freeform paths and nature trails to get around.

The Chinatown Historic District is also home to several small businesses created or expanded by ethnic Chinese immigrants who settled down in the area. Chinese bakeries, fruit stands, seafood restaurants, gift shops, and small cafes and bars are sprinkled throughout the Historic District. Many of the businesses are operated by elderly Chinese women who live in small apartments along busy streets. A visit to Chinatown will give you an idea of just how diverse ethnic Chinese cultures can be when they are joined together in one place. You’ll also be able to see how much influence Chinese immigrants have made on local cuisine over the years.

A visit to the historic district is also an excellent opportunity to shop for ethnic wear. One of the most popular shopping destinations for ethnic apparel in the city is the Four Seasons, located at Broadway and Myrtle Avenue. This location is not only frequented by many tourists but is also a favorite among locals. Many local stores, boutiques, and restaurants offer discounts and special pricing on garments from China, India, Korea, and other countries. Some of the merchants specialize in particular clothing styles, such as western-style kimonos and traditional dresses, while others offer a more comprehensive selection of apparel.

Chinatown can be a fun and exciting place to visit. There are many museums and galleries in the historic district that would interest children. If you plan to visit during off-peak hours, you may find the prices a bit higher than average. However, if you stay after mid-day, you’ll likely find the prices to be more reasonable.
