Downtown Historic District
What is there to see in downtown of the city of San Luis Obispo, California? That is a question I have been asked quite a lot, and I thought I would write an article to shed some light on it. First of all, I live in the area, and for me, when I go to my favorite shopping and dining destinations, I always try to find parking, and I have no problem finding it Downtown. Second of all, I like walking around and being active. If you enjoy strolling or jogging in the park, you might enjoy the various sports facilities close to Downtown.
“Downtown SLO [San Luis Obispo] is a 501c6 non-profit urban planning organization whose mission is to promote an economically vibrant Downtown and surrounding areas. Downtown SLO operates through the planning council, whose budget is controlled by the county government. The group has worked to increase affordable housing, support commercial and residential development, improve transportation, and historic preservation.”
The Arts District is a significant venue for various festivals. The area has been festering for many years but has gained momentum in recent years. The festival calendar runs for three months each year. In the summer, they even hold the Labor Day Weekend street fair. There is also an area designated Historic District, including the former Bank of America building, the county courthouse, City Hall, and the old City Hall.
I love coming down South street and walking through the Historic District. Walking down Third Avenue past the row of small cafes and shops is breathtaking. I love going to the corner stores on the opposite end of Third Avenue and having an extensive selection of goods at great prices. One of my favorite things to come back to is the Pies restaurant on the corner. It’s a fantastic place. They serve some of the best pies I’ve ever had.
If you enjoy history and touring historical sites, then this district is definitely for you. My wife and I take several days out of the year to visit. We also go on vacation here from time to time to enjoy all that Downtown has to offer. When we go out of town, we like to hit several of the attractions we’ve been to, like the Science Center, the Grand Theatre, and the beautiful Courtyard downtown. The Courtyard has an outdoor pool to relax outside and take in the beauty of the area.
Downtown is full of places to eat, shop, and drink, and there are many different tours to see all of it. But, the one thing I love about Downtown is the historic buildings. I especially love the old churches and historic homes. They add character to the area.
