Adair Park
Adair Park is located southwest of downtown Atlanta in Georgia. Its curly left bracket shape borders the northwest and southwest by the BeltLine trail and the Metropolitan Parkway. The park contains over 200 acres of green space that residents and visitors can use. It is home to many public art installations and a large lake.
Historically, the area was predominantly white, but a recent demographic study has shown that this is no longer the case. There are now many ethnic groups living in the neighborhood. The first city directories from the early 1980s establish a large number of people who are now retired, but there are also many domestic workers. Another change to the area is the replacement of the street railway with a MARTA station.
Previously, the area was a railroad crossroads named McCall’s Crossing. It was the primary access point to the West End for people living south of Atlanta. After Thomas Alexander died in 1878, his estate was subdivided. Plat 20 contained 75 acres and was later subdivided into six lots. Eventually, the area was given to his son T.A. Alexander, Jr., who built his residence southwest of the railroad tracks.
Adair Park is located near the MARTA station, so it is convenient for those who use public transportation. There are some local restaurants and groceries in the neighborhood. There is also a community center and a library. The setting is also home to several non-profit organizations that help local youth develop skills they will need as adults.
