How Much Does It Cost to Remediate Mold in a House?

The cost to remediate mold in a house is based on the square footage of the rooms to which you have to clean. The typical square footage for home ranges from 1500 up to 4000. But this is not a solid average as contractors also consider an additional 50 square feet for each bathroom and kitchen area encountered during remediation.

At a minimum, you should budget $300 (1500 sq ft) – $500 (2000 sq ft) per room, but you can expect prices to go higher than that depending on how many rooms need cleaning. Typically, the more rooms with mold damage there are, the higher your remediation costs will be. You can multiply these numbers by two if the contractor needs professional equipment to take care of the job. The type of equipment required will depend on what kind of mold damage your house has.

There are four types of remediation methods used to get rid of mold infestation in a home:

• Demolition and removal – This is considered an all-or-nothing option. After assessing the extent of contamination, you have to either close off certain sections or tear down your entire house and rebuild it from scratch. You can expect costs to run up to $100,000 for this method alone! As that number should be apparent, this method is only suggested if you deal with so much mold damage that demolition is the only solution left.

• Air scrub – Mechanical ventilation equipment sucks out mold spores and removes them from the air before recirculating them back into your home. Many experienced remediation companies use this method because their equipment also sterilizes the mood to eliminate all mold. If you choose this option, expect costs of $2000 (1500 sq ft).

• Bleach solution – A diluted bleach solution is applied to surfaces that are found to be contaminated with mold. The fungus dies off quickly when exposed to high chlorine levels; however, the fumes produced by using bleach need a lot of time to dissipate. These fumes pose no threat in most cases, but workers have been known to go out of business due to this method’s toxic side effects. Costs for this method range from $1500 up to $3000.

• Bacteria solution – These are made by combining the best qualities of air scrubbers and bleach solutions while eliminating their shortcomings. The process starts with applying a quick-acting biocide to surfaces. Afterward, mechanical ventilation equipment sucks out mold spores that have been exposed to the chemical. The only downside is that these machines aren’t always powerful enough for large jobs; therefore, remediation contractors charge around $6000 for this type of work.
