Meux Home Museum
In addition to being one of the top museums to visit in the United States, the Museum of Men’s House (MHR) is located in the city of Fresno, CA, and is one of the best museums to tour. Elegant 1800s Victorian plantation with fine art, period furnishings & guided tours offers a glimpse into California’s rich history. MHR is free to visit, but admission is required for the guided tours.
The museum can be reached by taking a train ride up Mt. Soledad. If you wish to tour the entire grounds of the home, be sure to plan and arrange for a guided tour during the peak seasons. The building can be visited, but the most convenient times are from May through October.
A visit to MHR is not complete without experiencing the “Lasts of the Great Depression” exhibit. This exhibit traces the Great Depression through everyday life in MHR. This tour is also a great way to learn about Fresno, as it offers insight into what life was like during the Dust Bowl. You will also enjoy learning about some of Fresno’s notable residents, including former residents of Los Angeles, lumber mills in Fresno, and even some former residents of San Francisco, all featured in this colorful exhibit.
To make the most out of your visit, be sure to pack comfortable clothing, as the climate in Fresno can be extreme at times. Please bring along a camera to capture the beautiful scenery and to document your fascination with it. Your photo opportunities are limited, so be creative! Maintaining an emergency kit will also help you stay safe and comfortable.
As part of your Fresno MHR experience, you will also be able to tour the home of Fresno’s first millionaire, Meriwether Lewis Clark Coots. Built-in 1911, the home features a lavish garden and fountains. Enjoy a stroll through the grounds and take in the lush beauty that surrounds it. A favorite place to visit is Coots’ original saloon, which is now a museum. Learn about the history of Fresno in this location. If you are a history buff, you will also want to make this a day not to be missed.
Don’t feel like you need to leave Fresno before you check out the local attractions. A trip to the Will Rogers recreational area is a must for any Grand Rapids visitor. For decades, the legendary golfer lived in Fresno, so feel free to stop by his home and have a meal. You will surely want to return for another round of golf!
